Glass fiber + carbon fiber: to create a new type of federal garden pavilion

    The School of Computer Design and Construction (ICD) and the School of Architecture and Structural Design (ITKE) of the University of Stuttgart are building two highly innovative and biologically inspired pavilions for the 2019 Federal Garden Exhibition in Heilbronn, Germany. This lightweight structure is completely designed by computers and manufactured by robots. These two pavilions embody and convey the typical innovative capabilities of Baden-Württemberg, which has been an internationally recognized center for the development of lightweight architecture, bionics and architectural digital technology for decades. As the main funding agency, Baden-Württemberg will play an important role in the exhibition.

    Compared with technical systems, biological structures have higher material efficiency and functional integrity. The conversion of lightweight principles, such as the high differentiation of materials and structures, combined with the development of computer design, simulation, and manufacturing methods, can create new types of building structures. The Fiber Federation Garden Pavilion is entirely made of individual fiber composite parts, and each part is made of glass fiber and carbon fiber through a robot automatic winding process. These methods can make specific adaptations to the shape and fiber layout of all 60 components according to structural and architectural requirements. The pavilion is not only efficient in structure and light in weight, but also provides a unique architectural appearance and spatial experience.
