    Huang Xiangyu: The previous Winter Olympic torches, including the Olympic torches, were made of metal materials. Our Winter Olympics Organizing Committee proposed to use new materials. We believe that carbon fiber is light, has good rigidity, and can replace traditional metal materials.

    But carbon fiber has its own difficulties. Because carbon fiber needs to be compounded with resin to make a composite material, it can be shaped like a torch. Composite materials are generally neither fire-resistant nor temperature-resistant, and achieving this goal is technically very difficult. Many new requirements are put forward in terms of what kind of resin to choose and how to make it in the process. These are all difficulties we have overcome when we develop the torch.

Huang Xiangyu: The first one is its weaving. We use a three-dimensional weaving method. So far, it is the most advanced technology we have used. It can weave various shapes to meet the designer's size requirements. This is a technological breakthrough in carbon fiber molding.

    The second is its mold design. The design of forming molds needs to use combined molds and various specially designed molds to solve the requirements of different curved surfaces.

    Third, a very special resin is selected, which can withstand high temperatures. Finally, the technology of resin molding is also specially developed and has a curing program. Traditional planning methods cannot solve this problem. Special measures must be adopted step by step to finally make the torch head made of this resin resistant to fire and temperature.
